Prophetic art refers to art that is made under the guidance of the Holy Spirit in order to edify, build up, strengthen, encourage, comfort, reveal, convict, and give instruction. Refer to my page on “What is prophecy?”
It is simply one form of prophecy such as verbal, written, dance, etc.
The term is used to describe art that is made during worship, or art which reveals God’s heart, thoughts, and intentions, or both.
Prophetic art, in my opinion, conveys a message that God has for the viewer. It is usually about His love, His goodness, His plan, and His will. Different pieces can convey different messages.
When an artist has a relationship to God and is filled with the Holy Spirit something supernatural can happen through the art which results in lives being touched and changed in some way.
Prophetic art can’t happen without the Holy Spirit. It’s as if God breathed into the art through his Holy Spirit to make it have impact. He may lead a particular person to a piece in order to touch on an issue that the person is struggling with, needs to be taught or reminded about , or simply to encourage him/her. The prophetic art may give a glimpse of something that is to happen in the future for the Body of Christ. It may reveal more about God’s nature. There’s so many ways God can use it, but it is to bless and edify, and created for the glory of God through the power of God.
Different prophetic artists go about the process in different ways. Some create exclusively during worship services. Some start out with a vision God gave them which they then translate onto the canvas or into other art mediums. Still others start and let the Holy Spirit guide them as they go. Some start off with an idea, bible passage, phrase, or impression God has put on their heart to create.
God doesn’t have one set way to do this. Just as there are different personalities, God chooses to express himself in different styles through different people. Prophetic art can be found in realism, expressionism, impressionism, abstract, etc and through a variety of mediums such as oil painting, acrylic paintings, oil pastels, digital art, sculpture, etc. This list is not even close to being exhaustive.
What all prophetic art has in common is that it was made under the anointing and under the direction of the Holy Spirit.
